And the Mountains Echoed: Review

By Namrata K. Agnija

Author: Khaled Housseini

Shelves: Fiction, Coming of Age, YA

And the Mountains echoed is the third novel by Khaled Housseini. Similar to its predecessors the plot is set in war-stricken Afghanistan. The plot is primarily set in Shadbagh, a small village, in Afghanistan. This place acts as the center from where the characters branch out and eventually come back to. The story is an apt reflection of what happens to people in places where war is always looming over the edge. While the plot starts off seemingly centered around the twins, Pari and Abdullah, it goes into depth of the lives of all the major characters and how they came to be.

The story really kindles the emotions and connects the readers with all the characters it goes into depth for. While it seems a difficult the author keeps the plot bound together even while dividing time and space for all the major characters.

While I loved the book and the storyline, the narration sometimes seemed a little too haphazard with trying to makes sense of all the POVs.

I would recommend this book to all the young adults and teenagers. Writings and accounts of war-struck Afghanistan becomes more and more important as we witness the fall of Afghanistan as the Taliban takes control. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
